What is the EventScript Plug-in? This plug-in add an essential feature to your FileMaker solutions;
The EventScript Plug-in is the easy way to launch a script from any calculation dialog box ! This feature should have been part of Filemaker for many years, but even the revolutionary version 7 of FileMaker is unable to trigger a reaction to a particular action or condition.

We have been developing databases since 1988, using various tools, and we think EventScript is an " absolute must-have " plug-in for building strong and reliable Filemaker solutions. The EventScript Plug-in gives the developer all the power s/he has ever dream of.
Users will love the benefits! End users don't have to remember to push a button before or after selecting a field since EventScript will automatically trigger your important scripts in real time. If something goes wrong with the script trigger, this plug-in will send an error that you can capture and analyze. (Error capture is optional and only for developers who want to double-check the critical processes)
Where can I use EventScript ? You can launch a FileMaker Pro script upon :
- Defining table's fields that can trigger a script after the user exit strategic fields. This is the "After Update" event.
Including :
- Calculations fields
- Standards fields (Text, number, date, time, timestamp even container) using
- auto-enter tab / calculated value,
- auto-enter tab / lookup value,
- validation tab / validated by calculation
- Editing security options to trigger a script before the user enters into a strategic field. This is the "Before Update" event.
- Create a custom Privilege set to totally control:
- Actions on records like View, Edit and Delete.
- Force your users to correctly enter some critical information before letting them go to other fields or other layouts. This is the "On Dirty" event.
- NEW UNDER FILEMAKER 8 : Great addition ! The "Mouse-Over" event can now be used.
- Sort lists and portals conditionally and then run a specific script if a particular condition is met.
- Want more? Using the developer/Advanced version of FileMaker, use EventScript to build very powerful FM 'Custom functions'. These "Custom functions" can now trigger the script of your choice.

Event examples : There are many "real world" things to do with EventScript. For exemple, you can launch a FileMaker script of your choice in these cases :

- The "before update" trigger can be invoked when you need to check if something important has been done before giving the user the permission to enter a strategic field. Let's say that your file includes a "daily exchange rate" and this "rate" may only be modified once per day. EventScript can trigger a script to confirm the status of the field "rate" and take the appropriate action if someone else is trying to change it a second time for the current day.
- The "After update" can automatically trigger a script when a user moves his cursor out of a particular field on your layout. Let's say the user must answer a first question correctly before being able to advance to the next questions. In this case, you can trigger a "validation script" without any button-pressing and tell the user if the first answer was correct or not.
- The "On Dirty" trigger can be the self-defence for your application. If a user enters garbage or tries to erase an important value, you can take the control and immediately fix the problem. This event will automatically launch a script if your validation rules are not strictly applied.
- The "Mouse-Over" event can now be reproduced through the use of the "Set tooltip" functionality (under FM8 and above).
- You can also send emails at any time upon predefined trigger events.
Uses are infinite... Your imagination is the limit.

Note: All plug-ins are developed natively for FileMaker Pro version 7 and better.
Update 2005-09-22 : EventScript version 1.1 for Windows is now available.
ES 1.1 addresses an issue which prevents version 1.0 from being recognized by FileMaker 8 under some Ms-Windows installations.
Since EventScript 1.1 (Windows) is compatible with FM v7, v8 and v8.5, it is a good move to update to the latest plug-in available.
Update 2006-07-11 : EventScript 1.1 for Mac (Universal Binaries version) is now available.
This new version run on new Intel-based Macintoshes AND also on older PowerPC Macintoshes.
Since EventScript 1.1 (Mac) is compatible with FM v7, v8 and v8.5, it is a good move to update to the latest plug-in available.

EventScript has been seriously tested and he successfully passed the 80 000 triggers non-stop test without any crash. That's a kind of "Ikea testing" where the same tasks are repeat intensively on the product to make sure it is built to be strong. This test takes six(6) days to complete, it was run on a small PII 233Mhz Windows computer with 256 Megs ram and FileMaker Pro 7 v2.
Thousands of people use EventScript around the world and until now, no bug has been reported by anyone :O)
